The tension mounted as chickens readied to race, their feather-light numbers making it possible for the announcer to identify each of the 27 racers. Residents, employees, and Sisters circled the race track, eager to urge their champions to victory. Four qualifying heats were held before the championship race, won by the small but nimble Sofia Loren, who ran circles around far bigger and stronger competitors. Residents got up close and personal with the chickens, sharing their hopes and dreams for their chickens’ futures. Chickens were brought to the home by the Weaver family, long-time volunteers and chicken wranglers, and went off to a chicken farm owned by (gulp) the Manager of Dietetics!
