St. Jeanne Jugan
The story of the Little Sisters of the Poor began on a winter evening in 1839 when Jeanne Jugan, a French woman, opened her heart to a blind, elderly woman in need. As she carried Anne Chauvin to her own modest home and laid her in her own bed, Jeanne set into motion a wave of charity and compassion that would spread across France and then, through her spiritual daughters, to the very ends of the earth.
Today, the Little Sisters operate homes in over 30 countries around the world. Inspired by the example of Jeanne Jugan, the Little Sisters of the Poor vow to live a mission of hospitality, serving the elderly poor without regard to ethnic background or religion. The homes of the Little Sisters of the Poor are strictly for the poor, with preference given to those with the fewest resources.
Jeanne Jugan was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 11, 2009.
The Little Sisters of the Poor at St. Augustine’s Home
Since 1873, the Indianapolis Little Sisters of the Poor have cared for thousands of elderly persons with minimal financial resources, regardless of religion or ethnic origin. Today, 10 Little Sisters work with over 100 staff members and hundreds of volunteers to provide a loving home for 96 elderly Residents, in independent living apartments, assisted living units, or in nursing care.
The Little Sisters operate St. Augustine’s as a true home, rather than an institution, so that Residents may live in an atmosphere of peace, happiness, and security for their remaining years. Residents enjoy the convenience of all of the following: doctor and dental offices, physical therapy facilities, dining rooms, recreational areas, a full-service laundry, an industrial kitchen, meeting rooms, beautiful gardens, and a chapel that is available 24-hours a day.
St. Augustine’s Home is truly a special place. When one Resident was asked what she liked about living in the home, she exclaimed, “Everything!” She continued, “When you come to live with the Little Sisters, you are not going to an ‘old people’s home.’ You are joining a community… It’s like a little family.”
