Dear Families of Residents and Friends of St. Augustine’s Home,
Good news! I am happy to report that there have been no new cases of Covid at St. Augustine’s Home for more than a month. We hope we are turning a good corner in this long, wearisome battle. We do continue all the infection prevention protocol mentioned in my last letter of January 22.
While the CDC last week relaxed the indoor mask mandate, healthcare providers like our St. Augustine’s Home continue to have everyone “mask up” while in the common areas of the Home, including hallways, offices and gathering spaces. Of course, meals and refreshment times are mask-free moments.
This year’s Mardi Gras celebration is once again low key but Residents will be coming together in Lanagan Hall for live music and much needed camaraderie. They are so happy to see friends from other areas of the building once again. Paczki doughnuts, an annual favorite treat before Ash Wednesday were devoured over the weekend by Residents. Thanks to generous friends, we were able to get them from Taylor’s Bakery but already we know we have to increase the order next year. No such thing as enjoying them by halves!
Small group shopping trips are back on the activity calendar and Residents are eager to get out and use Gift cards received over the holidays! We are in conversation with our Ladies Guild to re-open the Ceramic workshop which has been closed since the start of the pandemic. Several newer Residents have expressed a desire to take up paint brushes whether it be on ceramic pieces or in the Hobby Haven art therapy room. Others who had been busy pre-Covid in the Arts ‘n Crafts and Ceramics departments are just as excited at the thought of getting back to work!
On a different note, early in February one of our couples celebrated 70 years of marriage. Surrounded by family members and their St. Augustine’s family, Carl and Patty Lentz marked the actual anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving in our chapel and an earlier gathering at home with several generations of loved ones. You can see their smiling faces and read their story on the front page of the Criterion’s February 25th issue. What a wonderful witness they long lives together gives us all.
Thank you to everyone who are a part of our St. Augustine family. Let’s pray for one another.
God bless you!
Mother Maria Christine, lsp
