Last week, a Tuesday afternoon social was brought to life with the help of good companionship, great music, and best of all, some homemade wine! This special treat for the Residents was the result of months of work by one of St. Augustine’s very own employees.
Sylvia Stewart has been a CNA at St. Augustine’s since February of 1997. She is truly dedicated to the happiness of our Residents, often sponsoring Bingos, or gathering the Residents of her floor onto the sun porch for spontaneous afternoon socializing. I think her favorite, though, is to share her love of making homemade wine!
Residents on Sylvia’s floor often enjoy an occasional glass of wine with their supper, but a few times a year, she works with the Activities Department to host an event for the whole home. Sylvia makes all the wine herself, mostly fruit wines, which she develops at home, from her own recipes, each batch taking several weeks. When she has several varieties bottled to sample, she schedules a wine tasting. She even recruits the help of volunteers to provide musical entertainment!
Residents danced, sang along, socialized, enjoyed snacks, and of course sampled several of Sylvia’s one-of-a-kind wines. Among the favorites were the “orange juice” wine, and “strawberry parfait.”
